Day 29: 100 Days of Central Mass Features Rock House Reservaion

100 DAYS OF CENTRAL MASS FEATURES ROCK HOUSE RESERVATION

Located in West Brookfield, the Rock House Reservation is one of our favorite places to visit here in Central Mass.  James actually took his parents there last week when they were visiting from Texas.  Last Spring we hiked the trails with our 3 boys who were then, ages 1-4.  Needless to say, their little legs were tired and they slept like babies that night, but it was a great day.  There are over 3 miles of moderate hiking trails, Carter Pond and a nature museum overlooking the pond.  What is the Rock House Reservation?  It is a massive cave like shelter made out of rocks that was exposed after the glacial retreat 10,000 years ago.  By mid 1800 the land was a farm owned by William Adams whose descendant, F.A. Carter, dammed a small stream to create Carter Pond and built the cottage that now serves as the nature museum.  In the mid 1800s, Native Americans used this land as a winter camp.  Admission to Rock House Reservation is free and if you're planning on checking it out, give yourself at least 2 hours to roam the land and explore.  The park is open year round from sunrise to sunset.
