What's All of This Checking-In Business Going Around on Facebook, Twitter & FourSquare?
Over the past few months I've picked up on FourSquare as another form of social networking. I can't recall how I first heard about it, but basically it's an application you can download for free on your smart phones and a website you can visit online. I have mine linked to my Facebook & Twitter accounts so it automatically posts to all 3.
More and more I'm being asked what FourSquare is and what are it's benefits. FourSquare is a service based game used for social networking and marketing. There are several advantages to using it:
- Recognition - Have fun checking-in & earning points, badges and mayorships of local hot spots.
- Social Meetings - Lets your friends know where to hang.
- Orientation - Colleges are using FourSquare at orientations and to help students learn their way around the campus.
- Viral Effect - Marketing and reviews get blasted out to Facebook & Twitter in addition to FourSquare.
- Special Offers - Big Businesses are offering special incentives for checking-in and showing them the app.
- Customer Insight & Word of Mouth - Give and read reviews of local businesses.
So are geo-location applications such as FourSquare safe? As with anything, there certainly are downsides to using something like FourSquare. Here are some tips to keeping it safe & enjoyable:
- Do not post your home address on FourSquare - You can list a general address or range.
- If you're afraid of people finding out through Twitter that you're not home, don't link them!
- Rather than checking into a location when you first get there, check-in when you're leaving.
- Closely monitor your friend requests.
