A Little Father's Day Improvising!
Yesterday we took the day off from appointments and celebrated Father's Day as a family. Our original plan was to go to Southwick's Animal Farm in Mendon, MA. Dads get in for free on Father's Day and Moms get in for free on Mother's Day. It was a beautiful day to start, just a little on the humid side.
After we arrived, we ate lunch at the picnic tables and journeyed off to explore the zoo. About our 2nd hour there it started to thunder. We were in front of the gorillas, not close to any cover. Within seconds it started to downpour. We ran with the crowds to find somewhere dry. First we were underneath some trees, but it started to rain more and more and we decided it would be safer to find a building. Close to the baboons we found some cover with about 30 other people standing there already.
15 minutes later the rain letup so we ventured back into the zoo only for it to start back up again. We were all soaked and the kids were crying & scared of the thunder. We decided it was time to leave the zoo although we didn't make it even halfway through this year. At the gate I asked if I could have a rain check for next time and at first they said it had to be raining steady for 20 minutes before they'd give them out. I explained that we had spent $50 to get in just so we could spend another $50 on food to have to get soaked and leave without 
seeing our favorite animals because our kids were scared and wet. He felt bad and graciously gave us a rain check good through this year.
We started to drive to find a Baskin Robbins for ice cream and when we got there, it ended up being a Dunkin Donuts. No ice cream, keep driving! We drove and drove...through Providence, Rhode Island and kept going towards the ocean on the GPS. We stopped at a Rite Aid to buy some beach towels and got directions to a beach 5 minutes away called Conimicut Beach. When we got there it was close to 5PM, but the sun was shining and it was still warm. We hung out on the beach for a few hours taking pictures and searching for shells. We hit the playground before heading home.
On the way home we picked up some Wendy's for dinner and all had chocolate frosty's. With a little improvising, we had an awesome Father's Day.
